Understanding The Writing Process
Posted by qpen on July 26, 2009
Many people assume that a real writer can pick up a pen (or sit at a computer) and magically write a finished product, word by perfect word. Experienced writers know better. They know that writing is a process.
A series of activities that start the moment they begin thinking about a subject and end when they complete a final draft. Experienced writers also know that good writing is rewriting. Their drafts are filled with additions, deletions, rearrangements, and rewordings.
Writing begins with thinking about each writing situation. Your thinking involves answering the questions below:
-
Topic: What will you be writing about in this situation? The topic underlies all aspects of the writing situation. If you must choose your own topic or narrow an assigned topic, keep in mind the constraints you will need to follow.
-
Purpose: What will be your writing purpose in this situation? The purpose of you writing is usually to inform or persuade. Effective writing reflects a clear sense of purpose.
-
Audience: Who will be your audience in this situation? Your audience should be considered in all your writing. Is your audience more technical, or are you writing for a general audience.
-
Special requirements: How much time were you given, and what length should the article be? If reading or other research is required, you have to build time for it into your schedule.
Your writing situation is a major resource for you as you write. Refer to it often.
