Freelance Work – why is Freelance Work Becoming Popular?

Posted by Barry Walls on October 7, 2009

Thanks to the latest economic crunch, most people want to know what the cause of freelance work becoming popular is. Truthfully, freelance work has always been around. Most people never really referred to it as that, they just considered someone who was a freelance worker to be self employed.

Many people hold a traditional view of what exactly work is. They believe you should get up walk out your door go somewhere fill in a time sheet or punch a clock collect a paycheck and be happy for the stability of the routine. However, this latest global financial crunch has been a wakeup call to many people who have come to rely on this sort of outlook.

If a job is lost, there is an immediate need to replenish the income that no longer is there. They need to put food on the table and to keep a roof over their head and their family. If a family is involved this can be quite a task.

A way that people have made a second income is by moon lighting, doing simple tasks in exchange for cash. Most of the time moon lighting type jobs are only good for a few extra dollars, however, with a plan and some effort moon lighting can actually become a primary source of income.

This is where becoming a freelance worker comes into play. If you have any type of skill someone will pay you to use, it is very easy to become a freelance worker. By doing calculations you can easily figure out exactly how you can reach any income goals that you may have.

Here’s a quick example. We’ll say that George wants to become a freelance grass cutter. George can pretty easily ascertain how long it will take him to mow a lawn of a particular size. Let’s say that he knows a rather tiny yard, one that measures only about one hundred square yards, would take him thirty minutes to cut. He can charge someone $15 for doing this job. He can then calculate if he mows grass for eight hours per day he could cut six hundred square yards in that amount of time and his income would be $90 per day. Say George only wants to work five days a week that would be a nice income of $450 per week.

It’s always smart business to keep receipts for tax purposes. There are other ways which Jack can earn even more money by cutting grass; he could work longer days, he could schedule the jobs closer to each other so he can be more productive in one day, or he could take on more jobs temporarily until he has hit some sort of necessary financial goal.

Obviously, you will have to keep receipts and records so you can prove your expenses. Any time as a freelance worker you want to increase your income, you can always raise your rates so long as you don’t make yourself too high compared to your competition. You can also work longer hours to increase income without raising rates; you can also take on more people as clients for a short amount of time until you reach a particular financial goal. The answer to the question of why freelance work is becoming more popular because people realize there is no such thing as job security and if they have a marketable skill or are willing to do a job someone else will pay to have done, it can actually lead to a very lucrative income which can be fit into your family schedule instead of fitting your family time around work.

Writing Courses – Which Writing Course is for you?

Posted by Barry Walls on October 5, 2009

Writing courses are fairly easy to find either online or off but how do you decide which one will be best for you?

Like with anything that you will ever choose to buy, you need to make sure that the product will provide the training and information that you want in a form that you will benefit from.

Many people need structure when they attempt to tackle a new subject and learn. If you find you do better in a classroom setting, you may benefit more from an offline classroom based writing course.

You probably will want to research exactly what types of courses are available and what is required of you to take them. If you are brand new, you wouldn’t want to take an intermediate or advanced course. If there are certain aspects to your writing that you would like to improve than you should try and tailor your courses that most coincide with what your goals are. By being able to pick and choose only courses that you need, you will be able to save yourself a lot of time and more importantly a lot of money, just be sure that you don’t presume you know too much and don’t take courses that you would have truly benefited from.

Doing some research into the background and qualifications of your teachers is always a good idea. You should also try and get the opinions of students who have already taken some courses or who are currently taking courses. Class size is another factor you should consider. Having a large class isn’t terrible, but it just means that you won’t get as much personal time with the instructor as you would in a smaller class.

You should also know before you take teh course what type of text books or training materials you will be required to purchase, or if they are provided to you; also, you will want to know if the work you turn in will actually be evaluated and feedback given or if it will just be turned in and get a checkmark for being done.

If you are going to study at home by correspondence course or an internet delivered course (much more popular and flexible) you still need to find out if the course will cover the subjects you need and you still need to be able to find some information about the teachers. Quite often these courses will provide a mini-biography of the teachers and details of their qualifications and achievements. It should also be relatively easy to get testimonials from past students about how well the course worked for them.

After you’ve decided on the writing course that you are going to take you must be prepared to put the work and effort into the course. Not only do you have to make sure you have enough time set aside to take the lessons, but you will need additional time to do your practice work. You will find that it will take some repetition of the material to know the lessons well enough to move on to the next section of the course. It’s important that you don’t rush too much just to get to the next module if you haven’t mastered the last yet. Taking a writing course at home is probably the easiest way to do it, because it is so flexible.

What Should You Learn at a Book Writing Class?

Posted by Barry Walls on October 1, 2009

The mark of a great book writing class is one that will help you to write a great book but not make the joins conspicuous to your readers. You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that not all classes are going to be exactly the same as each other.

The very first thing that you should be aware of is that not all classes are the same. Books come in varieties and it is important that you know the sort of book you want to produce before you decide on a class to go to. There is no point at all in going to a class about writing fiction if you want to learn how to write autobiographies. Some aspects will be the same, research, for example, but you cannot apply the same process of writing to these two types of books.

Most people thinking about writing a book are thinking about writing fiction. While it is possible to simply sit down and make up a story based in a made up location, there are aspects of writing a book that can make the process more logical, easier and faster.

For most authors, the first thing about a new book is the plot. They decide what is going to happen, how it is going to happen, where it is going to happen and when it is going to happen. Within the plot they will add or develop sub plots. Learning how to create a credible plot and sub plots is very important because these are the foundations upon which the book is built.

The location can often be an important part of the early book planning as well. If a real location is used for the setting of the book, it is possible that some of the plot or sub plots will need to be changed in order to fit in with the location. A real advantage of an actual location is that it can be visited and the real possibilities and limitations worked out on the ground, so to speak. A real location also enables continuity to be maintained by ensuring that, for example, what is a steep track for the characters in one scene does not become a footpath in another.

Character development becomes a little easier when an author uses a real location because they can base the characters loosely on the actual people who live and work in that place or people who happen to catch their attention. Character development is a very important aspect to writing a book that must be done well to have a successful book.

As well as teaching you how to build your plot, find your location and create your characters, a good book writing class will show you how to build the story on the plot, within the location and using your characters. At the same time it will teach you how to get your readers involved with the characters – maybe even identify with them. It will teach you how to build suspense and how to introduce unexpected twists to keep your story moving forward.

Being able to keep your story moving and using plot twists are also assets to any fiction book author.
