When it comes to Italian restaurants, New York City has some pretty amazing ones. Of course, it does not compete with the great cities of Italy, but it just may be the next best place. Regardless of the type of pasta you are looking for, there is somewhere to get it in New York.
At the moment, the following restaurants serve up my favorite bowls of ravioli, tagliatelle, gnocchi, fussilli and others.
I will start off with one of my overall favorite restaurants, Convivio. This place is just awesome. Chef Michael White pulls out all the stops with this pasta, serving up amazing dishes like maccheroni a la carbonara, which might be the best version of the dish I’ve ever tried.
Another must try place when visiting New York City is the legendary Il Mulino. This place is too good. You will leave so full you will not want to eat for days. One piece of advice: do not fill up on the breadsticks.
No list of pasta places in New York City would be complete without mentioning a restaurant in Little Italy. If I’m looking for a great place to catch up with friends, we go to La Mela on Mulberry Street. Any place in Little Italy will get the trick done.
Located in the East Village, Barbone might be favorite place to go to on this list. It is a quiet, unassuming restaurant with fresh pastas made daily. The owner, Alberto, is a great guy and if you are visiting New York and want great food at an affordable price, this is a great spot.
Finally, a Scott Conant restaurant should be named. While the Meatpacking District lacks in great restaurants, Scarpetta is worth visiting. The spaghetti is the star of the show, served al dente to perfection.
These are just some of the best pasta places the Big Apple has to offer, but with so many options, there are many others that are worth writing another article about.

If you have never delved into the world of sushi before, you are missing out. There is a reason sushi is so popular. If you already eat this Japanese delicacy, then chances are you love it. There is so much to like about the art and variety of sushi.
If you have a sushi restaurant nearby, here are some fun options of things to try.
I happen to be a big sucker for shellfish. Any time there is a roll on the menu with snowcrab in it, or better yet, Alaskan King Crab, I feel compelled to get it. If you are not so comfortable eating raw fish, this is a good option for you.
It should be noted that one type of roll that is probably not worth the amount of money it usually costs is any type of roll with lobster. The lobster is never as good as the type that you would have at a good seafood restaurant.
If you do not like eating raw fish, then a great option is the spider roll, which traditionally consists of soft shell crab tempura. When’s the last time you had something fried that wasn’t delicious?
Any time I’m at a sushi bar and I cannot decide what type of fish I am in the mood for, I do the obvious: get all of them! One of the best ways to get an assortment like this is to get a rainbow roll, which usually has a variety of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and whitefish on top of crab, cucumber and avocado.
When you go to a trendy restaurant, it is ok to feel tempted to want to try some crazy “designer” rolls as I call them. These rolls are usually quite pricey and although you lose the flavor of the fish when ingredients like mango and kiwi are introduced, these pieces are quite delicious.
These are just some of the wonderful rolls to try in the world of sushi. Next time are trying to decide what to eat, branch out and try some sushi.

This year, the NBA playoffs has been both a letdown and incredibly interesting. In this article, I am going to give a breakdown of what has gone down on the Eastern Conference side of the playoffs.
The Orlando Magic played the Charlotte Bobcats, in what was the Bobcats’ first playoff series ever. I was pulling for the Bobcats in this one as they have a lot of likeable players. The Magic came out on a mission, however, and it was never really close. The Magic swept this series with a mission to return to the Finals.
The Chicago Bulls faced off against the number one seed, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Everyone had high expectations for this years Cavs, as it was potentially Lebron James’ last year in Cleveland. Lebron and the Cavs took care of business and beat the Bulls in 5 games, 4-1.
The Celtics played the Heat convincingly and we learned that the Celtics were back with the 2008 look in their eyes. I feel bad for Wade, because I don’t see him ever returning to the NBA finals, barring a superstar making a splash in Miami this offseason.
Surprisingly, the best matchup of this series ended up being the Milwaukee Bucks vs. the Atlanta Hawks. The Bucks are a quietly dangerous team and Brandon Jennings has a bright future in Milwaukee. This was the only series that went to 7 games and the Hawks were fortunate to win, but that’s where their playoff fortunes would end.
Round 2 gave way to some lackluster matchups. The Magic plowed through the Hawks in 4 games straight by a record setting margin of points. It was never close.
On the other side of the bracket, the Cavs faced the Celtics. Everyone thought the Celtics were too beat up, too old and that Lebron was too good for the Celtics to take this one. In an absolute shocker, the Celtics took this one in 6 games and quite possibly ended James’ reign in Cleveland.
The Eastern Conference finals is taking place now between the Magic and Celtics. The Magic are fighting a losing battle and are down 3 games to 1, with little hope of pulling out another W. There’s always next year.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are a good college basketball team. They have never made it to a final four and they don’t get the exposure of some of the other SEC teams, but they are incredibly exciting to watch.
Sure I am biased because I went to school there, but this team has had some incredible wins in recent years. Here are the top 5.
In 2008, for a brief period, the Tennessee Volunteers were ranked as the number one team in the country. Their reign lasted a whole two days and was brought to a sudden end by Vanderbilt. On national television. Some title reign that was.
If you are a fan of college hoops then you know Florida was dominant in 2006-2007. They were the first back to back champions in quite some time. What you may not be aware of is the fact that Vandy handed them their first loss as defending champions.
Even though I hated them at the time, the Gators were an incredible team. Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer and Taurean Green were all on this team.
In the 2007 NCAA Tournament, Vandy faced Washington State in the second round. This game was so evenly matched that it went back and forth the whole time. Derek Lee on Washington State carried this team, but Derek Byars carried the Commodores just a little bit more and won out.
2007 vs. Mississippi State – In Shan Foster’s last home game at Vanderbilt, he erupted and scored 44 points, including 9 three pointers! This game was an out of body performance by a great player who couldn’t have deserved it more.
Another great game was against Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament, back in 2003. Mississippi State was heavily favored, but Dan Cage stepped up from the 3 point line when he needed to and allowed Vandy to win in double overtime.

When it comes to food cities, the United States has some pretty good ones. Sure, it may not have as many good restaurants as France or Japan, but I would like to think it comes in third place. The following are the best food cities in the United States.
The undisputed champion of restaurants in the US has to be New York City. It has the most restaurants of any city and the most quality ones. With three star Michelin standouts like Per Se and Jean Georges, the number of high end restaurants in the city is endless.
When it comes to uniqueness and true American style of cooking, I think that New Orleans takes the cake. It is a truly unique style of cooking, taking southern elements and combining them with French influence. Standout restaurants include Commander’s Palace and Emeril’s.
Las Vegas – Most major chefs have realized the potential of Vegas and opened up shop out here. Only in Vegas can you have a world class meal at 3 AM at places like Shibuya and N9NE steakhouse.
San Francisco is crawling up on New York’s trail. I think in the next few years, it will overtake New York as the best food city in America. Standouts include Cyrus, Manresa, and of course, Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry.
How does Lobster with lychee, gruyere and vanilla fragrance sound to you? This dish can be had at Chicago’s Alinea, which is arguably the best restaurant in all of the United States. Chicago also has other great restaurants, but the Michelin guide has yet to take notice.
The sushi in Los Angeles is rivaled only by Tokyo. Katsu-Ya, Matsuhisa, Sasabune and Urasawa are amongst the best. The other restaurants aren’t half bad either!
So that’s the list. These cities have the potential to get even better if the economy picks back up.

There are few things that sound as great as a song with a talented female vocalist. This applies to nearly all genres of music, and female singers are responsible for some of the most successful songs in music history. The last 15 years have seen even more emerge, and the movement continues to gain steam.
This paved the way for the indie rock movement of the last decade, which is still going strong as we enter a new decade. Much of the success of this movement can be attributed to some great, innovative female vocalists whose music shines, largely in part to their incredibly pleasant voices.
This article is going to focus on a few of the biggest female talents in indie rock music today, with their vocals being the deciding factor in who makes the list. While there are dozens I could easily list here, I’m going to limit this article to my favorite four.
First, I’d like to mention Regina Spektor. I’m in a coffee house as I write this, and her music is playing. This in fact inspired me to write this article.
Her voice is believed my many to be one of the best in music today, and some exceptional songs over the last few years have showcased her raw talent.
Another great vocalist in female music is Cat Power. Her real name is Chan Marshall, and she’s been making great music for about a decade now. With so many songs on her resume, both original and covers, her laid back style of blues music is one of the best in the indie world.
A newer arrival to the scene is Sharon Jones. While she’s not so new in the music world, this 50 something singer is certainly new to the indie scene. Having partnered up with the Dap Kings, this unique combination of musicians has some great Motown type music to show for it.
Lastly, Shara Worden, who produces music under the “My Brightest Diamond” moniker, may very well be the best of these. Listen to her cover of “Feeling Good” for affirmation of this.
