How To Write Memoirs – And Why You Should Do It

Posted by Trevor Johnson on December 3, 2009

Most of us have at some time or other given the idea of writing our memoirs at least a fleeting thought. But for the majority of us that is where it stayed. How to write memoirs is not a subject taught at school, so we just don’t know where to begin.

Perhaps you started thinking about your childhood. How you left school and went to university. Your first job. How you met your loved one. The births of your children and later their marriages. Although all those things meant a lot to you, why would it mean anything to someone else?

But perhaps that is exactly why your life experiences could mean something to someone else. Your struggle with a particular disease, the way you coped with it, could help someone else who has to cope with it right now. The way you dealt with the loss of a loved one, or didn’t, could perhaps shed some light on coping with their own loss for another person in some far away place..

You don’t have to find a publisher before you can publish your memoirs any longer. Nowadays there are many websites on the Internet where you can do this.

If you don’t do it for someone else, do it or yourself. Describing the road you walked to get where you are today could give you unexpected clarity on the road you should be walking from here. Seeing your own successes and mistakes unfold over the course of a few pages will help you to see it all with a perspective that little else could have given you.

Do a quick search on your favorite search engine for the term how to write memoirs. You will no doubt find numerous websites with a lot of valuable tips on getting started with this. Once your thoughts start to flow it will become a stream that you can’t stop.
