Previously, we discussed Keeping an Idea Book and Writing In A Journal today we will be discussing:

Freewriting

Freewriting is writing nonstop about anything. It means writing down whatever comes into your mind without stopping to worry about whether the ideas are good or the spelling is correct.

When you freewrite, do nothing to interrupt the flow. Do not censor any thoughts or flashes of insight.

Do not go back and review. Do not cross out. Some days your freewriting might seem mindless, but other days it can reveal interesting ideas to you.

Freewriting helps get you used t the feel of pen moving across paper or of fingers in constant motion at a computer.

Freewriting works best if you set a goal: perhaps writing for fifteen minutes or filling one or two pages.

Keep going until you reach that goal, even if you have to write one word over and over until a new word comes to mind.

If you write on a computer, you can avoid the temptation to stop and criticize your writing by doing invisible writing. Dim your screen so you can’t see your writing. The computer will still be recording your ideas, but you will not be able to see them until you brighten the screen again.

To create the same effect writing by hand, use a worn-out ballpoint pen and a piece of carbon paper between two sheets of paper.

Focused Freewriting

Focused freewriting means starting with a set topic. You can focus your freewriting in any way – perhaps a phrase from your journal or a quotation you like.

Using the focus as a starting point, write until you meet the time or page limit you have set as a goal. Again, do not censor what you say. Keep moving forward.

Like journals, freewriting can be a source for ideas and details to write about.

Next time we will be discussing: Brainstorming
