Freelance Writing For Beginners: How To Make Money Writing

Posted by Angela Booth on July 4, 2010

If you’d like to make money writing, it’s easier than it’s ever been. There are hundreds of thousands of websites online eager to hire you today. You can set up your own full-time career quickly.

When I say the process I’ll share with you is easy, I mean it. Please don’t get hung up on your lack of experience. You can get experience fast: all you need to do is follow the process.

I sold my first freelance writing efforts in the early 1980s. In those days, you weren’t paid to learn: you served your apprenticeship and learned, before you started to sell.

Nowadays, you earn as you learn. Every business online needs content, so you get paid to practice.

Let’s look at a simple process which starts your freelance career.

1. Set up a personal blog at any one of the free blogging services online, and start to write — you can choose any topic you please. The idea of blogging is that it accustoms you to others reading your words.

As you write your own blog, read other bloggers. Although many professional writers blog, most bloggers are amateur writers. Anything they can do, you can do. This will build your confidence.

2. Comment on others’ blogs. Make your comments interesting and perceptive: spend some time on it. The idea here is to make contacts and get to know other bloggers.

Next, approach bloggers and ask whether you could write a guest post. Writing for other bloggers, although you’re writing for free, builds your confidence. It also gets you known.

3. Got confidence? By now, you should be feeling good about your abilities, so offer your blogging services for small payments. You’ll get clients fast.

I know these initial writing jobs are for tiny pay, but be aware that you’re making much more than money. You’re learning how to sell your words, and you’re also getting a reputation. People talk to others, and before you know it, you’ll have more clients, and will be charging more.

I hope the above process sounds simple to you. That’s because it is. However, be aware that it’s also powerful, and if you follow it, you will soon have a highly profitable freelance writing career.
