Bridegroom Speech – How To Get Prepared

Posted by Cindy A. Dayrit on June 7, 2010

While delivering speeches after the wedding ceremonies has been a tradition for maybe centuries, bridegrooms still don’t seem to get the hang of delivering their own bridegroom speech on the most important day of their lives. No matter how strong your urge not to prepare and deliver a speech on your wedding day, it is still best that you follow what tradtion prescribes.

Try following the tips here to help get rid you of intimidation and stage fright.

Plan ahead of time – It would save you a lot of time later if you can jot down the things you would want to say on your speech right after you have decided on the wedding date. The ideal thing to do is to list all the people you want to thank, anecdotes you would like to share and funny one liners that you think would get your guests some good laugh. Develop the speech as the day approaches and add details when necessary. This way, you’ll have half the problem solved as you shift your attention to other things.

Although you may feel confident to make your speech impromptu, nothing still beats a well-prepared speech, so make it a point that you at least have made some preparations before the wedding day comes up.

It’s okay to rely on prompt cards – It is perfectly okay to use small cards while delivering your speech. These could jog your memory and help you remember key points. These still work well even if you already know your speech by heart.

Edit your speech and practice how exactly you will deliver it – Once you’re done with your first draft, print it out, proofread it and practice how you will deliver it. The best way to correct any speech is to put it on first paper, this allows you to see the errors on the speech easier. While editing your speech, remove and replace unnecessary sections, words or expressions, this helps in polishing the content of the speech.

Once you’re satisfied with your edited speech, start practicing your delivery. Ask one of your friends to act as your observer and later, ask him to criticize your work. Allow them to give as much feedback as they can; take note of these. In case you can find a friend to help you, try practicing your delivery in front of the mirror. Watch yourself deliver the speech – observe how your body moves, your facial expressions, your phrasing, your intonation and the general movements that accompany the words you speak. These tricks could make your speech flawless, if not, good enough for your friends and family to listen to.

Relax – Get some rest the night before the big day. Getting enough sleep is integral in the delivery of your speech as this could help lessen the anxiety you would be feeling as you anticipate the moment when you have stand on the podium. Take a hot shower, relax in a bath tub with aromatherapy oils for relaxation, or drink some relaxing tea. Whichever way you do it, so long as you’re in bed early, it’s good.

Use a funny one liner in your bridegroom speech – Jokes make your listeners laugh as well as for you to relax. If delivered right, jokes can significantly improve the effect of your speech on its listeners.

Simple preparations for your upcoming wedding and bridegroom speech could go a long way in delivering that perfect speech. For more pointers, visit my website.
