This book review is for The Season of Passage, written by Christopher Pike. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It had a great twist on an old and well known subject. The story is supposed to take place in the future. (It was written a while ago – in 1992 – and the “future” is now our past: 2006)
I like that the author did not go overboard with futuristic devices or inventions, but just accentuated the already known technology, such as making a phone with a visual conference screen, or making it possible for people to go into space for a vacation; things like that.
A team of various scientists are sent to Mars to find out why an earlier team never returned from their mission. There, the present team is introduced to a virus that basically turns them into vampires. I thought the vampires were well done and believable. They were still frightening, but I had a good perspective on why they were they way they were.
The author also invented an old time legend from before civilization as we know it. The legend explained how vampires came into existence in the first place and was a classic story of a battle between good and evil.
I loved how the author was able to tell readers of times that are long past, giving us an interesting mythology dynamic, while also inventing a futuristic world. Not only was it creative and original, but the story was incredibly well told. I could not put the book down when I started it.
The book is listed in the Horror genre, and I think it fits while not being too horrific or gory. Of course, with these kinds of darker subjects, there are going to be some bloody parts, but I thought it was presented in a tactful manner. I didn’t get too much of a gory visual and think to myself, “Eeeewww! That is so gross!” But I don’t usually get grossed out with the darker kind of content, so you will have to judge for yourself in that respect.
There were some real scary parts that almost gave me chills and other parts were sexy, light-hearted, sentimental, and humorous.
The characters were also well thought out and I loved the way they interacted with each other. I was even able to continue to like the characters that had turned evil. I loved the way the author pulled so many emotions from me as I read along and the ending was nice and solid, making the entire reading experience complete. This is a book that I could easily reread and still enjoy. I’ll be keeping this one and adding it to my library.
